Admission to the NAME graduate program is granted to students who have a successful record in achievement in their previous studies and show a strong potential to succeed in studies at the advanced level.
MS/MSE – Master of Science – Program Code 00326
(application deadline January 15)
Applicants for the M.S.E. or M.S. degrees normally hold a Bachelor of Science degree in naval architecture and marine engineering with an average grade of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. However, the graduate program has been structured so that students with a bachelor’s degree in other engineering disciplines that require knowledge of basic mechanics such as mechanical engineering, applied mechanics, aerospace or civil engineering may also start directly on their master’s program. Students with a bachelor’s degree from another field without knowledge of basic mechanics, and whom only want to pursue a master’s degree, will be required to take NA 470 (Foundation of Ship Design) or NA 491 (Marine Engineering Laboratory I) as well as take several undergraduate-level courses, which will be determined on a case-by-case basis. Applicants to this program should complete the Rackham School of Graduate Studies application.
PhD – Doctor of Philosophy – Program Code 00324
(application deadline December 15)
Applicants for the Ph.D. degree normally already hold a master’s degree with an average undergraduate GPA of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale. Admission procedures are the same as for the Master of Science in engineering degree program. A student becomes a pre-candidate upon admission. No assurance is given that the student may advance to candidate status until evidence is given of superior scholastic ability. Applicants to this program should complete the Rackham School of Graduate Studies application.
SGUS – Program Code: 01556 – Only for current Undergraduate UofM students (deadline Jan.15)
Applicants for the SGUS Program (Sequential Graduate/Undergraduate Study) have to apply for the SGUS in their Senior year. Only Undergraduate students with a 3.2 GPA or higher will be able to enroll in this program. Students earning dual Bachelor’s degrees are NOT eligible for the SGUS program.
