The University of Michigan was the first university to offer a program in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NA&ME) in the United States (1881). Recognized as one of the top departments in this field in the world, nearly forty percent of university graduates working in NA&ME are alumni of the department. Our alumni hold numerous leadership positions in the industry, academia, and government.

Due to the outstanding reputation of the department, and long tradition of excellence in education and research, our graduates receive multiple job offers upon graduation.  The most common areas in the field of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering for which our students work after graduation include: ship design, shipbuilding, offshore structure design, offshore structure building, yacht design, yacht building, naval combatant and support ships, small craft, coastal engineering, marine environmental engineering, shipping and transportation, fishing industry, and engineering support to ocean scientists.

Every month throughout the year, the department is contacted by prospective employers.  Between the months of September and March, our department hosts numerous companies that visit, speak to our student group and conduct interviews for entry level positions.  To schedule a visit to the department, please contact our undergraduate office for details.
